Critics Consensus

While certainly overlong, The Five-Year Engagement benefits from the easy chemistry of its leads and a funny, romantic script with surprising depth and intelligence.

The Five-Year Engagement | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Deborah Ross The Spectator It has emotional heft, with no frantic, last-minute drives to the airport, just a male and female lead who not only share actual, proper, bona fide chemistry - hallelujah! Praise be! - but are also allowed to go head-to-head as equals. Sep 1, 2018 Full Review The Five-Year Engagement | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Scott Foundas Film Comment Magazine More often, the movie reduces everything to sitcom levels of tidiness and routine. Jun 20, 2013 Full Review The Five-Year Engagement | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Offers plenty of chuckles - although not enough to justify the middle-aged spread of its two-hour running time. Jun 24, 2012 Full Review The Five-Year Engagement | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The Five-Year Engagement feels like a step down from Segel and Stoller’s previous films together, but there’s enough sentimentality and comedic charm here to grant a solid recommendation. Rated: 3/4 Nov 20, 2022 Full Review The Five-Year Engagement | Rotten Tomatoes (5) David Bax Battleship Pretension The Five-Year Engagement is in many ways the inverse of every Hollywood movie like it. Also, it's really funny. Mar 4, 2021 Full Review The Five-Year Engagement | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Splashes of slapstick, a dash of vulgar humor, generous helpings of uncomfortable awkwardness, and a pinch of melodrama season the film. Audience Member Over 10 years and Judd Apatow makes another hilarious romantic-comedy tons of laughs and such sweetness and sincerity Blunt and Segel have terrific on-screen chemistry the movie goes on a tad too long but the characters allow themselves to grow and learn what love really is when tying the knot I also really love Alison Brie as the sister who gets married 1st and has a change of heart about the whole institution when she's raising a family and knows what's best for Violet in the process, she can pull off an English accent maybe John Rys-Ifans' storyline could have been cut, too this movie though made me laugh, put a smile on my face and helped me look at the whole image of what marriage should run its course Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review Steve O Star Spangled ! Decent plot, excellent character development ! Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/23 Full Review Fi S Awful. Tedious pacing. Emily Blunt and Jason Segal are written as two silly muppets. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/25/23 Full Review Jonathan L It's funny, and I LOVE the cast. However the main relationship seems forced and the film puts too strong a focus on sex. Still worth watching, but could be better. 70/100 Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/23 Full Review Marc G One of the best romcoms Ive seen. Very funny, too. I found myself laughing out loud several times. Emily Blunt is enchanting and as always Chris Pratt is hilarious. Excellent script filled with wit and killer comedic hits. Also, makes you want to move to SF and never want to live in Michigan. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/07/23 Full Review Vander A It's difficult to watch otherwise very talented people act in a movie so straining for cuteness. Mostly it's an embarrassment for Emily Blunt. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
